Rochester Fashion Design students Cristina Bree and Mark Martin won tickets to visit Mark Powel’s bespoke tailoring talk in Soho. They were accompanied by fellow students Lizzie Fidler and Csilla Pelyvas.
A designer who has dressed the likes of David Bowie, Bradley Wiggins, Bianca Jagger, Keira Knightley, Martin Freeman and many others, Mark’s Q&A’s kicked off with his first experiences within the industry and how he started in tailoring. Powell’s mother was his greatest influence and an inspiration as she made clothing and costume for theatre as well as the Greek tailors who passed their knowledge onto Mark during the start of his career as a young designer. Mark mentioned that to produce a tailored jacket, it takes him and his team 6 weeks with at least 2 to 3 fittings. “There are others who try to copy what I do” he says, “but they don’t know how to get the right balance between exaggeration, subtlety and styles. It all comes down to detailing, while keeping a dandy edge. I’m firstly about style and then I’m about the craft of tailoring”
We were welcomed with open arms by Mark and it was interesting to learn about his business. Mark Powell remains true to himself, with an ability to connect with people from all walks of life. As an uncompromising stylist, modernist and educator, he’s a man to whom details will always matter.
