What have you done since graduating in 2013?

I was very fortunate to have a great start into my career with the opportunity to start as a Design Assistant to the Head Designer at Triumph, an International Lingerie Company based in Germany. Working very closely together on many projects, I was able to learn a lot from her and was promoted to Junior Designer just under a year being with the company. Now I have the chance to work on a small collection and design the garments as well as design prints and finding colour concepts.

What were the most important skills you learned whilst studying at Rochester?

The way the course is set up in Rochester is great, since that is exactly how it is done in the industry too (at least in the company I work in). Starting from concept, trend, and colour research, to initial designs, to sourcing fabrics, to technical drawings, to pattern cutting (also with Gerber!), to sampling – tasks I do and work with daily. Knowing how to do the right research or how to communicate your ideas is definitely very important and a great skill you learn at UCA. Being creative, thinking outside the box – definitely another one. There are so many I could list!

How did Fashion Design Rochester prepare you for industry?

The course made sure you were ready for the industry. A lot of things I see and do here every day, I was taught at UCA. Be it Gerber, or the sampling room techniques, preparing and overseeing catwalk shows, designing, working with programs like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, I couldn’t have been better prepared! Also time management and working under pressure to get things done on time or for a certain deadline are very important.

Did you enjoy your time studying Fashion Design and in Rochester?

I definitely enjoyed studying Fashion Design at UCA in Rochester! It’s such a great university with amazing tutors that not only simultaneously still work in the industry themselves, but help to push you and get the most and best out of yourself. I made a lot of incredible friends that I am still in touch with now and that come and visit me here, even though I live in another country.

What advice would you give to the current and future students?

Take everything in! Seriously there are so many amazing tutors and people at UCA that have so much knowledge and things to teach you. Use and practise all the programs that you are taught like Gerber, Photoshop, Illustrator etc., it will only benefit you. You will need them in the industry and at University you have the time to practise. Learn, work hard and always try your best and hardest to get you where you want to be.

And use your time wisely, do internships whenever you can and get the opportunity to, and network with people – it will be a great advantage once you are in the industry.
